Morning Session

Spoken Word Poetry Performance with Karen Burns
Karen Burns is a storyteller, dancer, and survivor, who has worked professionally in the arts for her entire career. Karen’s poetry and prose have been published in literary journals, several publications, with six original plays produced in Phoenix, Los Angeles and New York City. Beginning her career as a Rockette at Radio City Music Hall, Karen went on to work in theater, television, and film. Karen’s award winning solo show, An Otherwise Magical Life premiered at the Herberger Theater Center in Arizona going on to perform in Los Angeles followed by a night on Broadway. Hard to kill, her memoir will be published as soon as she finishes writing it. As a survivor of a serial killer and a lifetime of debilitating illnesses, Karen believes we are all to share our stories of overcoming in the hope of offering a road map for another’s mountain to climb.

Sara Chambers is a brand strategist and the CEO of Elly and Nora Creative, a full-service creative agency focused on building and activating brave, bold, and brag-worthy brands. She’s also the Founder and President of the non-profit Chicks Who Give a Hoot where she helps female entrepreneurs connect to their purpose and passion through aligned action. She also serves as the host for the organization’s long-running podcast. Before Sara founded Elly and Nora, she spent the greater part of her career helping non-profits, authors, and lifestyle brands in marketing, public relations, communications, and everything in between. She started Chicks Who Give a Hoot in 2010 as a cheeky handmade shop and has seen it through every evolution until it found its true purpose in this current season.

Fireside Chat with Shareé Hurts, MLS of APS
Shareé Hurts is Strategic Partnerships Program Manager in the Community Affairs Department at APS working with community partners to create, collaborate and implement programs that benefit all Arizonans. During her 15 year tenure with APS Shareé has worked in customer service, corporate events, marketing, and corporate communications. In addition to APS, Shareé spent ten years in the healthcare industry, focused on Medicaid. Specializing in project management, proposal development, and organizational governance.
In addition to her career in the corporate sector, in 2015 Shareé began teaching as an adjunct faculty at South Mountain Community College, where she has taught in Administration of Justice and in the Storytelling Institute.
Shareé is a storyteller who’s performed in the Arizona Storytellers Project and PBS Stories from the Stage. She enjoys facilitating storytelling workshops for professionals and especially for youth. She is a mother of two and a community advocate.
Shareé has a bachelor’s degree in political science from Arizona State University West and a master’s degree in law from the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law, ASU. She currently serves on the Earn to Learn Board of Directors, Moonshot AZ Advisory, the National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Phoenix Metro Chapter and is Board Chair for FIBCO Family Services.

Using tools from The Monastery’s approach to creativity, you’ll express your reflections through imagery, symbols, or words—no artistic skills required.
Charith brings over a decade of Communications and creative leadership experience to Chicks Who Give a Hoot. A seasoned traveler and photojournalist, she has visited nearly 30 countries, capturing impactful stories and creating campaigns that drive change. As a mixed media artist, Charith’s work is showcased in galleries and through commissioned projects for brands and businesses, reflecting her passion for storytelling and cultural inclusivity. Her career highlights include managing multimillion-dollar budgets, leading creative teams, and developing strategies that have increased engagement, elevated brands, and driven impactful campaigns. As as the owner of Denson Creative Agency and Co-Founder of The Monastery, an arts incubator, Charith channels her creativity and vision to empower communities and support female entrepreneurs, aligning with her mission to inspire growth, dialogue, and shared humanity.

Nicolee Thompson
Co-Founder and current CEO/Executive Director of Harvest Compassion Centers
In 2004, Nicolee and her family founded the 501©3 Mitchell Swaback Charities, Inc. (MSC) in memory of the sudden loss of her brother Mitch in a drowning accident. In 2011, Harvest Compassion Centers (HCC) were opened as MSC’s response to the US recession; with a mission to serve our local neighbors with life’s necessities: food, hygiene, baby and clothing items. Today, MSC fully funds and operates three HCC locations in North Phoenix/Scottsdale, West Phoenix and in the Maryvale community.
Before MSC/HCC were created Nicolee graduated from University of South Carolina with a Bachelors in Education and Masters of Liberal Arts English. Nicolee’s love for sports including volleyball also led her to be a college coach in the years prior to her brother’s passing.


Tamala McBath
Chief Executive Officer, Dress for Success Phoenix
As Chief Executive Officer of Dress for Success Phoenix, Tamala McBath is responsible for guiding the organization’s mission of empowering women and their families to achieve financial independence through education, support, and viable employment. Tamala is also a keynote speaker, executive coach, and trainer in both for-profit and nonprofit leadership. Her commitment to community service is evident through her volunteer work with the City of Phoenix’s Human Services Commission and its Community Development Review Committee. She is also a recent appointee to the Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and serves on the national board for the Meaning & Hope Institute.
Tamala has been recognized as an influential leader, being featured in media outlets like the Phoenix Business Journal, FOX10, ABC15, Arizona’s Family and nationally on CBS News. Her accolades include being part of Phoenix Magazine’s prestigious “Great 48” and being named an “Outstanding Woman in Business” by the Phoenix Business Journal. She completed her executive master’s degree at Arizona State University’s Thunderbird School of Global Management and is a 2022 fellow in ASU’s Knowledge Exchange for Resilience (KER) program.
